Sometimes, an idea for a Tiny Matters episode comes from me listening to the news and being like, “I keep hearing about this, but I really have no idea what’s going on.” Deep sea mining is one of those topics. Going into this episode, I knew that there were a number of environmental concerns around deep sea mining, but I didn’t know the specifics of those concerns. I didn’t even know how deep sea mining worked. But what I really, really fundamentally didn’t understand is that deep sea mining isn’t even happening right now at scale. It’s been a hypothetical industry for decades at this point. And while plenty of people are trying to take the “hypothetical” out of that, we’re still a long way from that happening.
So this whole episode is really about why deep sea mining isn’t happening yet, which means that it’s also about why the deep sea is so mysterious and difficult and incredible. Listen to this episode if you…
- want to hear about the time the CIA recruited Howard Hughes to pretend to do deep sea mining
- love the idea of gigantic science cruises
- also have been nodding along to deep sea mining conversations without knowing enough to contribute
